Fixed-term for Spring and/or Summer 2027 in the first instance

Cardiff Steiner School is seeking an inspiring Biology/Ecology Teacher to join our Upper School team.

This role offers a refreshing opportunity to teach science deeply and creatively, free from the restrictions of traditional GCSE and A-Level curricula. Working with young people aged 14-19 through our Steiner Waldorf curriculum and the Certificate of Steiner Education (NZCSE), you’ll have the space to bring science to life through genuine inquiry, practical discovery and meaningful engagement.

We warmly welcome applications both from established Waldorf educators and from those new to our ethos but eager to expand their practice within a creative learning environment.

We have six teaching blocks available across the Spring and/or Summer terms 2027:

  • Human Body Systems (class of 14 students age 14-16)
  • Ecology (class of 14 students age 14-16)
  • Ecology (class of 14 students age 16-18)
  • Genetics (small group elective students age 16-18)
  • Adaptation of Organisms (small group elective students age 16-18)
  • Functional Anatomy & Biomechanics (small group elective students age 16-18)

Flexible Delivery & Scope
While we would ideally love a candidate who can teach all six blocks, we warmly welcome applications from those who can cover a selection of these subject areas only. Delivery can be tailored flexibly, structured either as 6 full weeks (can be split into 2 x 3 weeks blocks) or part-time over a longer period.

We regularly host visiting teachers who join us to teach blocks of several weeks, and free accommodation can be provided for candidates traveling to deliver these blocks.

The position is ideal for a Secondary/Upper School science teacher with a Biology specialism, or an industry practitioner/naturalist looking to connect meaningfully with classroom teaching.

Salary: £4,500 for the six blocks, including planning, prep and post-delivery assessment and reporting.

About you

You bring excellent subject knowledge in Biology/Ecology, supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience teaching at this level. Whether you are an established teacher or have comparable experience working with young people, you possess the skills and passion to work creatively with students to support their educational and personal development.

You will bring strong planning and assessment skills, or a readiness to build them with guidance, to help every student reach their full potential and meet the standards of the Certificate of Steiner Education (NZCSE). What matters most is an open, curious mindset, and a desire to align your teaching practice with our ethos. You will be supported by an experienced, collaborative team offering peer mentoring, curriculum guidance and training in delivering the NZCSE framework.

About us

Set in Wales’ capital city, the School offers a full Kindergarten to Class 12 Steiner Waldorf education. Founded in 1997, we opened our Lower School in 2012, built upon the firm foundations of 15 years as a successful Kindergarten. From strong roots we quickly grew, and expanded to Upper School in September 2017 offering the New Zealand Certificate of Steiner Education (NZCSE), with our first Class 12 graduating with the Certificate in 2021.

The NZCSE is the first trans-national, secondary school qualification to be fully based on the Steiner curriculum. It’s a valid, alternative qualification, equivalent to A Levels and the International Baccalaureate, recognised by UCAS and accepted by UK and international universities. The NZCSE is the most widely offered qualification in UK Steiner Schools that offer a full K-Class 12 Steiner Waldorf education.

We are a passionate and committed team who enjoy rising to the challenges and celebrating the joys that a young School brings. Our internationally diverse teaching team includes subject teachers in Bothmer, Eurythmy, Handwork, Craft, Spanish, Games, as well as a team of specialist Upper School Teachers.

We are a small school by design, with a collaborative staff team, supportive families and a strong community spirit. Our teachers are at the heart of our success and we have developed a strong culture of collaboration where staff are valued and your input, enthusiasm and talents will be welcomed and appreciated. You’ll benefit from a professional development programme of peer mentoring and training in delivery of the NZCSE.

We operate a two-year combined class system and you will have the advice and support of teachers experienced in working with the pedagogical needs of combined classes.

We are a Waldorf UK full member School, and are fully independent.
